Nick parked in one of the spaces between his building and Annmarie’s, slipped out of the dark green Jag convertible, glanced up at the building next door, then checked his wristwatch. Seven o’clock, on the dot. So what if he was an hour early?

Chuckling quietly to himself, he crossed the empty construction zone, skirting piles of lumber and neatly stored equipment. He jogged up the front steps to the stately brick building that housed Weston Designs and, with any luck, Ms. Annmarie Weston.

He carried another bouquet tucked in the crook of his arm, a colorful mix of daisies, bachelor buttons and dark blue irises, along with a bottle of very expensive white wine. He wasn’t quite certain when he’d decided to pursue Annmarie. Marriage certainly wasn’t in the plan and she hadn’t done anything to encourage him, at least not since that first incredible meeting Monday morning.

She’d thrown down the gauntlet when she’d come to his office. The image of those beautiful long legs beneath the hem of that oh-so-prim pale-colored suit had turned him on more than he’d imagined possible. Of course, while drooling over her shapely legs, his mind had been filled with the thought of her face in the heat of passion, her moist lips parted, eyes tightly shut, nostrils flared. Nick took a deep breath and rubbed his thumb over his fingertips, recalling her slick heat when he’d brought her to orgasm.

Ever since that unbelievable episode, he hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind. Her fiery response, her angry, flashing eyes, her scent, her taste. There was nothing more intriguing than a worthy adversary. This morning’s bouquet and invitation to dinner had been meant purely as a peace offering, a chance to get to know one another and explore the possibilities of continuing a more personal, if temporary, relationship.

Annmarie’s descriptive response had been a dare he couldn’t ignore. Once he realized the battle lines were drawn, Nick knew she hadn’t left him a choice. Didn’t the woman understand? No real man in his right mind could ignore a challenge like hers.

The gift of a replacement pair of lace panties had been Nick’s answering salvo. Unfortunately, he’d had to rely on Tim and Ted’s description of Annmarie’s reaction to his gift. Too bad neither he nor they had seen her expression when she opened the box.

Nick paused on the front porch. Maybe Annmarie’s assistant would tell him. He didn’t know her name but she seemed nice enough. Waved to him in the morning, always spoke pleasantly to the kids. Not bad-looking, either, once you got past the huge belly and swollen ankles.

If the direct approach didn’t work, that might be the next tack to take. Subterfuge. A sneak attack through a trusted associate. No. Subtlety had never been his strong suit. Forget Annmarie’s pregnant assistant.

It was the direct approach or no approach. Nick knocked lightly on the front door. He wondered if Annmarie’d slam it in his face once she realized he’d not only arrived, he’d arrived an hour early.
